Hobgood begins career in Bluefield

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD — Last Saturday, Matt Hobgood came out of the Bluefield Orioles dugout at Bowen Field to meet with a few fans and make his way to a comfortable bed. He had just completed his first start as a professional pitcher, giving up one run in one inning and struggling to find his form.

But Hobgood was unfazed. The Bluefield Orioles had just beaten the Johnson City Cardinals 10-8 and Hobgood left satisfied with a big wad of sour apple-flavored Big League Chew tucked inside his jaw.

Before leaving the park, he took some time to discuss his big night as well as his past and future. Hobgood assessed his own performance as solid, yet unspectacular.

“I thought I made some good pitches,” he said. “Six feet to the left, six feet to the right, you got out of the inning with nothing. But that’s baseball. I get to come back in five games and try it again and the most important thing is we won. So that’s your goal when you go out and help your team try and get a win.”

Hobgood had not thrown in off a mound since June 6 in the bull pen at Camden Yards and thrown in a game situation in months.

“Sitting for three weeks, everything builds up,” he said. “I was nervous, but I’m glad it’s out of the way ....”
